Live coverage of day five of the fourth Test match between England and Australia in the Ashes 2023

Here’s the latest official update that has just popped up on my phone: “If it doesn’t rain anymore, there will be a pitch inspection at 11am. The outfield is wet due to heavy rain overnight.” (Italics OBO’s own)

Live Scenes: It’s currently raining.

“Good morning, James.”
Morning to you, Michael Robinson.
“Just to confirm, if there’s an inspection at 11, the earliest possible play would be 11:30? My father-in-law is visiting from the south and wondering when to come to the ground! Hopefully, we’ll get some play…”
I believe it usually takes 40 minutes from the inspection to the start of the game. However, it has just started drizzling at Old Trafford, so I wouldn’t recommend getting in the car just yet. Gah!

In 2005, the Guardian published a delightful book compiling the best of the OBOs from the 2005 Ashes series. Mike Atherton mentioned it on Sky yesterday. Its title? Is It Cowardly To Pray For Rain? If this series goes down to a decider at the Oval, let me be the first to suggest a follow-up titled: Boss, We’re Too Lucky To Get Wet.

To be fair, that is quite amusing:

Preamble
Hello and welcome to WEATHER WATCH Live!

“Oh, sunny days, where have you gone?”

What have you been doing the past few days? Constantly refreshing and switching between different weather apps, holding on to the most promising or apocalyptic forecast depending on your loyalties? I thought so.

So, what’s the latest? Well, there’s a glimmer of hope for play. Currently, it is not raining at Old Trafford, and the dedicated ground staff of Lancashire CCC are working hard to dry the field.

There’s a large band of rain, aptly named “the blob,” hovering just above Manchester. The deciding factor will be whether it moves north or south and lingers over Old Trafford like a damp blanket all day.

This match and the series deserve a result. It would be a great disappointment if the weather prevents that. I’m sure quite a few Aussies might feel the same way. Okay, maybe just a few.

It’s not a guaranteed outcome either. After Marnus’ hard-fought century in the gloomy conditions yesterday, there’s still a chance that the last five Australian wickets could set England a challenging total in difficult batting conditions.

Stokes and his teammates will be praying to the weather gods for an opportunity to take to the field and enough time to chase down the five deliveries they need to level the series and bring it to an epic one Test showdown at the Oval next week. Has anyone checked the weather in south London for next week?

Alright, let’s keep our eyes on the screens and the skies!
