Lineth Beerensteyn of Netherlands Exits World Cup Following Critical Remarks Towards USWNT

  • Dutch forward Lineth Beerensteyn criticized USWNT players for their arrogance at the 2023 World Cup.
  • She and the Netherlands are now returning home after Beerensteyn missed multiple opportunities against Spain.
  • Americans, including Sydney Leroux, responded to Beerensteyn’s comments by pointing out her own lack of performance.

Dutch striker Lineth Beerensteyn has faced criticism since the Netherlands’ 2-1 loss to Spain in the World Cup quarterfinals on Friday.

However, the criticism did not come from her own country or the victorious side. It came from the United States of America.

Prior to the Netherlands’ match against Spain, Beerensteyn publicly celebrated the elimination of the US Women’s National Team from the tournament in the Round of 16.

“From the first moment I heard they were out, I was just like, ‘Yes! Bye!'” Beerensteyn said.

She criticized the Americans, who are the two-time reigning World Cup champions and FIFA’s top-ranked team, for their alleged arrogance and preoccupation with reaching the final from the early stages of the tournament.

“I was thinking you first have to show it on the pitch before you talk,” Beerensteyn commented.

Despite stating that she was not being rude and still respected the US team, the 26-year-old Juventus forward seemed to frustrate some individuals in the US. When Beerensteyn struggled to score in the Netherlands-Spain match despite having multiple chances, many Americans, including former USWNT star Sydney Leroux, pointed out her failure to follow her own advice.

“One thing we’ve learned is to wait to talk until after you’ve won a gold medal,” Leroux wrote. “Because now… you’re out too.”
