Lilia Vu dominates Women’s Open by six shots; Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow eye victory at home

The golfer ranked number 13 in the world achieved a birdie on the 16th and 17th holes, allowing her to finish the tournament tied for 30th place with a score of one-over-par.

Although it was her only below-par round of the week, she remains unfazed by her performance. Despite not being in contention for the win, as Vu secured her second Major victory of the season with a five-under 67, the golfer from Co Cavan is not allowing herself to worry.

In an interview with RTÉ Radio, Maguire expressed her thoughts on her performance, saying, “I felt like I didn’t make any major mistakes this week, but maybe I just didn’t do enough right and didn’t have enough birdies.” She acknowledged that the golf course played a role in her performance, adding, “A bounce here and there could have made a big difference. Overall, I’m satisfied with finishing the week with my best round on Sunday.”

Looking ahead, Maguire has already set her sights on upcoming tournaments, including the ISPS Handa World Invitational and the KPMG Women’s Irish Open. She also expressed her excitement for the Solheim Cup in Spain in September.

When asked about the possibility of winning the Irish Open, Maguire replied, “It would obviously be very special. I’ll try not to put too much pressure on myself, especially with more Irish players participating this year. The support from the crowd will be crucial.”

Meanwhile, Vu, who was tied for the lead with Hull, took control of the tournament with a strong performance on the front nine. Despite Hull’s effort to narrow the gap with an eagle at the 11th hole, Vu maintained her lead and finished six shots ahead of the competition.

As for Stephanie Meadow, she faced difficulties throughout the tournament, finishing in 56th place. She attributed her struggles to challenges off the tee and her health, but remains optimistic for future tournaments, stating, “That’s golf. It can be tough, but I have the chance to bounce back next week and play some great golf.”

In the FedEx St Jude Championship, Seamus Power finished tied 66th after shooting a one-under 69. He faces a challenging task in the BMW Championship to secure a spot in the Tour Championship.

At the Farmfoods Scottish Challenge, Jonathan Caldwell had a strong finish, carding a four-under 67 to secure a tie for third place.
