- Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and the singer’s mother, Tina Knowles, played a role in assisting Lil Rel Howery with his proposal.
- During an appearance on “The Tonight Show,” Howery revealed that he initially sought advice from Tina Knowles.
- However, the proposal at a Beyoncé concert didn’t go exactly as planned.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z assisted actor and comedian Lil Rel Howery in his marriage proposal to Dannella Lane during the Renaissance World Tour.
Howery proposed to Lane at Beyoncé’s concert at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on September 4, with the moment displayed on the big screen for everyone to see.
However, during his appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Howery revealed that he nearly messed up the plan by going to the bathroom.
Howery reached out to Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, for help in executing the surprise proposal at the concert.
“I got the tickets last minute, but I called Miss Tina because I wanted to propose during the perfect song,” Howery explained. “I asked Miss Tina, ‘What’s the perfect song to propose to?’ And she said, ‘Well, do it to “Love On Top.”‘”
During her recent tour, Beyoncé stopped singing in the middle of the ballad, allowing the audience to sing the chorus instead.
“I thought, ‘Alright, that’s perfect. That’s when I’ll do it.’ And she said, ‘Well, I told Jay that you were proposing, and he suggested that we could put it on the jumbotron for you,'” Howery recalled. “I was like, ‘Woah, wait a minute now.’ You know, there’s already pressure when proposing.”
“I didn’t ask for all the other stuff that came with it,” said the actor from “Free Guy.” “I just called to ask for a song, and everyone else said, ‘Do the jumbotron.’
Howery mentioned that Beyoncé agreed to the plan, but since he wasn’t aware of the setlist, he didn’t know when she would perform the song.
At one point, he had to use the bathroom — which happened to be when the intro to “Love On Top” started playing.
“By that time, the crowd was singing. This was my part. So I quickly ran in and out, retracing my steps,” Howery said. “I managed to find my seat because I could see the cameraman sweating, talking on his earpiece like, ‘I don’t know where he is.’ And then the crowd started getting annoyed because they had been singing the acapella for so long.”
Howery mentioned that Beyoncé herself gestured for him to hurry up from the stage, prompting him to get down on one knee and propose.
Both Howery and Lane shared videos of the proposal on Instagram, expressing their gratitude to Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Knowles for their assistance.
