The National Arena League (NAL) is currently investigating a social media altercation between Antonio Brown, the majority owner of the Albany Empire, and John Cheney, a part-owner of the Orlando Predators. Cheney expressed displeasure with Brown’s management of the Empire during an episode of the Predators talk show “Pred Talk,” which was later posted on Twitter by a Predators employee. Brown responded by calling the NAL a “trash league” and took a shot at Cheney, prompting the league to initiate an investigation. NAL commissioner Chris Siegfried said that a judgment will be made in the following days and both owners could face fines.
Cheney’s comments were as follows: “Albany’s coming into town. … (Bleep) Albany,” Cheney said. “That’s all I’ve got to say – AB, all them, I don’t like anybody who messes with the league. This is the NAL. I’m not going to hold anything back. They know that. This is the NAL, National Arena League. You want to be an (expletive), go to another league, you know? Very, very nice guy when I met him and everything, for all the (expletive) that’s going on up there that we’re getting publicity for, they need to correct their house.”
Brown responded with the following tweet: “Pay the hotel bill u fat (expletive) report that talk about that u not following owners responsibility broke owners in the NAL trash league.” Brown did not clarify what he meant by “the hotel bill,” and he has not responded to subsequent requests for comments.
The Empire have had a tumultuous few months under Brown’s ownership, with four different head coaches in the span of three months. Additionally, players left the team in May after they reported that they were not paid. Last week, Brown was asked to leave the team hotel in downtown Albany after the police received complaints of loud music and marijuana usage.
