Lawsuit Holds Peloton Accountable for Fatal Accident: NYC Man’s Workout Tragedy with Fallen Bike

NEW YORK (AP) – In a tragic incident, a woman has filed a lawsuit against Peloton following the death of her son. Ryan Furtado, 32, lost his life when his Peloton exercise bike fell on his neck during a workout in his New York City apartment.

According to the lawsuit filed on March 10, 2022, Furtado was performing a workout routine in his Brooklyn apartment that involved transitioning from the bike to floor exercises and then back on the bike. On January 13, tragedy struck as the bike spun around and struck him on the face and neck, ultimately severing his carotid artery and causing instant death. The lawsuit claims that the equipment was sold in a defective and unreasonably dangerous condition.

Johanna Furtado, the mother, filed the lawsuit on behalf of her late son, claiming that he attempted hoisting himself up from the bike when it unexpectedly spun around and struck him. The impact resulted in the severing of his carotid artery, causing instant death. The lawsuit alleges that the equipment was sold in a defective and unreasonably dangerous condition. Johanna Furtado is seeking unspecified damages. She accuses Peloton of negligence for failing to provide adequate warnings that the bike could tip over when used as a brace.

In response, Peloton’s lawyers argue that the company is not liable for Furtado’s death, attributing his injuries to his own negligence and misuse or abuse of the product.

A spokesperson for Peloton expressed condolences to the Furtado family and stated, “We offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Furtado family for this unfortunate accident. As a Member-first company, the health and safety of our Member community is a top priority.”

Ryan Furtado, originally from Hawaii, worked in sales at the marketing company Demandbase, as indicated on his LinkedIn page.

This incident appears to be the first attributed to a Peloton exercise bike resulting in a fatality.

In a separate case, Peloton recalled approximately 125,000 treadmills in 2021 after reports of a child’s death and injuries to 29 others.

Similarly, the company recalled over 2 million of its stationary bikes earlier this year due to the risk of the seat post assembly breaking during use, posing a fall and injury hazard.
