Exactly one year ago today (July 2, 2022), a mother took legal action against the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District on behalf of her then-11-year-old daughter, who allegedly experienced sexual abuse by a teacher during the 2019-20 academic year.
This lawsuit was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court against both the district and the accused teacher, Scott Waln. The complaint accuses Waln of engaging in unlawful sexual acts with a minor, displaying negligence, intentionally causing emotional distress, and violating various state Penal, Education, and Civil codes.
In addition to demanding unspecified compensatory damages from both defendants, the complaint also seeks punitive damages specifically from Waln.
Unfortunately, a district representative was not immediately available for comment.
Waln, who is 60 years old, was arrested in May and faces charges of one felony count of engaging in lewd acts with a child under the age of 14, as well as one felony count of committing forcible lewd acts with a child under the age of 14.
The plaintiff was a student at Norwalk’s Los Alisos Middle School. According to the lawsuit, a former school principal and other unidentified administrators, teachers, and staff within the district were aware or should have been aware that Waln was sexually abusing the plaintiff and other female students, or had the potential to do so.
The complaint also alleges that district staff had previously reported Waln to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for engaging in sexually inappropriate conduct with students. Despite this prior awareness, the district still allowed Waln unsupervised access to students in his classroom during non-instructional times, such as recess.
According to the lawsuit, despite complaints from the plaintiff and other girls about Waln’s abusive behavior at Los Alisos Middle School, the school staff disregarded these complaints and failed to report them to law enforcement.
The plaintiff has experienced significant physical and mental harm as a result of these events, as claimed in the lawsuit.
