LAUSD Schools Shut Down as Tropical Storm Hilary Strikes, Expected to Resume Operations on Tuesday

The campuses of the Los Angeles Unified School District were closed on Monday due to heavy rainfall caused by Tropical Storm Hilary. However, classes are expected to resume as usual on Tuesday.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho announced on Sunday afternoon that the decision to close campuses was made because the district was unable to predict if there would be any damage overnight or if conditions would make it difficult for students and staff to reach the schools.

During a news conference, Carvalho stated, “Our inability to survey buildings and determine access to schools makes it nearly impossible for us to open.”

Carvalho also noted that some students start walking to school as early as 5:30 or 6 a.m., while bus drivers report to work as early as 4:30 a.m. He added that many district employees live far away from their worksites.

On Monday morning, Carvalho defended the decision, saying it was based on scientific data and current conditions.

Campus facilities were still being assessed on Monday, and early reports indicated that around two dozen campuses had no phone or internet service. One campus also experienced a minor mudslide, and there were access issues in the Sun Valley area.

By late morning, phone and internet service had been restored at the affected campuses.

Carvalho confirmed that schools will reopen on Tuesday following normal schedules.

The majority of independent charter schools in the LAUSD area were also closed on Monday. Parents were advised to check with individual operators to verify the status of these schools.

The district has set up twelve grab-and-go food distribution locations between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday to provide students and their families with three meals.

The distribution locations are as follows:

– South East Senior High, 2720 Tweedy Blvd., South Gate

These include Antelope Valley Union High School District, Anaheim Union High School District, William S. Hart Union High School District, Castaic Union School District, Newhall School District, Saugus Union School District, and Sulphur Springs Union School District.

In Orange County, classes were canceled on Monday in the Anaheim Union High School District and Anaheim Elementary School District. Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana also remained closed.
