LAUSD School Shutting Down Monday as Tropical Storm Hilary Approaches

Due to the continuous heavy rainfall and the potential for overnight damage caused by Tropical Storm Hilary, all campuses of the Los Angeles Unified School District will be closed on Monday, as announced by Superintendent Alberto Carvalho on Sunday.

Superintendent Carvalho explained that the district cannot risk keeping the campuses open when there is uncertainty about whether the schools will sustain damage overnight or if the conditions will worsen, making it difficult or even impossible for students and staff to reach the campuses.

“Due to our inability to assess the condition of the buildings and determine access to schools, it is nearly impossible for us to open,” Carvalho stated during a late afternoon press conference.

He emphasized that some students in the LAUSD start walking to school as early as 5:30 or 6 a.m., and some bus drivers report to work as early as 4:30 a.m. Additionally, many employees of the district live far from their workplaces.

“To ensure the safety and well-being of every child and staff member in the LAUSD, it is prudent to cancel school,” he added.

Superintendent Carvalho also announced the cancellation of all athletic activities and other third-party activities.

While independent charter schools are also expected to be closed, Carvalho advised parents to confirm the status of these schools with their individual operators.

Furthermore, Carvalho stated that the district will establish grab-and-go centers to distribute food to students and families who heavily rely on LAUSD food programs. The details of this distribution will be available online, and the centers are expected to be operational on Monday afternoon.

In addition to the LAUSD, several other school districts in the Santa Clarita Valley have canceled classes for Monday. These districts include the Antelope Valley Union High School District, Anaheim Union High School District, William S. Hart Union High School District, Castaic Union School District, Newhall School District, Saugus Union School District, and Sulphur Springs Union School District.

Cal State Fullerton has canceled in-person classes for Monday, but online classes will proceed as usual. Cal State Long Beach will switch to virtual operations on Monday, and in-person classes will resume on Tuesday as scheduled.
