LAUSD Board Declares June as Pride Month and Encourages Inclusion of LGBTQ+ Education in Schools.

Following a Pride Month assembly at a North Hollywood elementary school that led to protests by parents, the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education has unanimously passed a resolution, encouraging all district schools to incorporate lessons on the LGBTQ+ community into their curriculum. The board aims to make June LGBTQ+ Pride Month and October LGBTQ+ History Month, while honoring National Coming Out Day (October 11), Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20), Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31), and a Day of Silence (April 12) to recognize the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Research shows that 25% of high school students identify as LGBTQ+, and LGBTQ+ youth are at a higher risk for homelessness, bullying, and suicide. Through this resolution, the board is committed to ensuring LGBTQ+ students and staff feel safe, heard, and respected and have access to mental health resources. It encourages all schools to teach children about the LGBTQ+ community to make their world larger, diverse and more inclusive. While a few parents protested the Pride Month assembly at North Hollywood’s Saticoy Elementary School, the assembly, including the reading of a book on diverse families, did not contain any sexual material. The protesting parents claimed that they were not against the LGBTQ+ community but wanted the right to decide when and how their children were taught about the subject. By passing the resolution, the board hopes to ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn and grow academically and socio-emotionally as a valued member of the school community and be prepared for the realities of the beautiful and wonderful world they live in, which includes different types of families and people.
