Representative Lauren Boebert, a hard-right Republican rabble-rouser from Colorado, has publicly apologized for her disruptive behavior at a recent performance of the family-friendly musical “Beetlejuice” in Denver. The incident was captured on surveillance video, which showed her vaping and causing a disturbance in the theater.
Ms. Boebert, 36, initially denied reports of her vaping at the show. However, a pregnant woman sitting behind her approached her and asked her to stop, leading to Ms. Boebert being ejected for causing a disturbance, as reported by The Denver Post.
In a statement released on Friday night, Ms. Boebert expressed remorse for her actions, acknowledging the negative attention it brought to the community. She stated that her intentions were not malicious, but she understands that her behavior caused harm and regrets it.
Ms. Boebert attributed her actions to the challenges of her public and difficult divorce, admitting that she fell short of her own values that evening.
Ms. Boebert, a mother of four boys who enjoys sharing pictures of her new grandchild with her colleagues in Congress, now claims that she genuinely does not recall vaping that evening. This contradicts the earlier statement issued by her campaign denying her involvement. She acknowledges the hard work ahead to regain the trust of her constituents in her district.
With a narrow re-election victory of just 546 votes in 2022, it will be a challenging task for Ms. Boebert to win back support from Colorado voters.
Despite the close call during her re-election campaign, it seems Ms. Boebert has not grasped the message that Colorado voters may not appreciate her disruptive style of politics. Since January, she has engaged in actions that many Republicans find detrimental to their goal of retaining control of the House in 2024, as well as to her own political career.
In June, Ms. Boebert attempted to force a vote on articles of impeachment against President Biden, accusing his immigration policies of constituting high crimes and misdemeanors. Her colleagues labeled the move as “crazy,” and it was ultimately redirected to committees for further review.
Ms. Boebert also made headlines during the contentious speaker’s race in January, where she staunchly refused to support Representative Kevin McCarthy of California. This garnered significant attention from Fox News. Within the House, she has cultivated a confrontational public image, frequently heckling her Democratic colleagues in the Capitol and largely ignoring reporters’ questions, except to emphatically proclaim, “I love President Trump!”
Her behavior has attracted a devoted following on the right. Ms. Boebert, known for her five-inch Lucite heels and form-fitting dresses, has amassed a national base of fans who appreciate her disruptive antics and extreme rhetoric.
On the House floor, Ms. Boebert has vocally opposed drag performances for children, claiming that the left is “grooming” children by exposing them to “obscene content.”
