NEW YORK — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Friday that the next round of COVID-19 vaccines will be modified to target the latest version of the coronavirus.
This decision by the FDA follows the recommendation of an external advisory panel. The agency has directed vaccine manufacturers to provide protection against the omicron variant known as XBB.1.5.
Although current vaccines provide some protection against the original coronavirus and an earlier version of the omicron variant, the effectiveness diminishes over time and is less effective against milder infections. Hence, the formula for the vaccine is being adjusted.
The three major U.S. vaccine manufacturers have already prepared to produce the updated formula in large quantities for the upcoming fall season. Pfizer, one of the manufacturers, aims to have some doses available as early as next month.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will ultimately determine whether the updated vaccine should be recommended for all Americans or only specific high-risk groups.
