LASD Recruit Involved in Fatal 2022 Wrong-Way Crash Passes Away – Orange County Register

Alejandro Martinez, a recruit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, tragically lost his life after a harrowing eight-month battle with severe injuries sustained during a training exercise with his colleagues from the sheriff’s academy. Last year, while running with his academy classmates on a road in south Whittier, Martinez was struck by a vehicle driving in the wrong direction. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals at the UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

KTLA5 reports that Martinez was 27 years old.

Surrounded by loved ones, Sheriff Robert Luna, and fellow department members showing support for his family, Alejandro Martinez has found eternal peace. Tragically, he was unable to fulfill his noble aspiration of serving others. We extend our deepest condolences to Alejandro’s family, friends, and fellow academy classmates. He will forever hold a special place in our hearts and his memory will never fade. The enormity of our gratitude cannot be adequately expressed to everyone who offered assistance and continues to support us, alleviating the burden in those dark times.

We would like to express our gratitude to the California Highway Patrol Santa Fe Springs Office, CHP Southern Division Investigative Services, M.A.I.T. – Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau, the various Los Angeles County Fire Department stations, and the dedicated healthcare professionals who provided exceptional medical care.

During the crash, 25 recruits, including Martinez, sustained injuries, as confirmed by sheriff’s officials at the time.

Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, the motorist responsible for striking the cadets, claimed in 2022 that he had fallen asleep behind the wheel. Although Gutierrez was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, he was released the following day, as authorities deemed further investigation necessary to unravel the complexities of the case.
