Las Vegas Resorts Infested with Bedbugs: A Recap of the Last 18 Months

In the past year and a half, seven popular hotels on the Las Vegas Strip, known for attracting tourists and entertainment seekers, have experienced the unfortunate presence of bedbugs. The Southern Nevada Health District received a complaint regarding this issue, which was obtained by local news outlet KLAS. The affected hotels include Circus Circus, Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Palazzo, Tropicana, MGM Grand, and Sahara.

One guest at Caesars Palace reported being bitten by bedbugs in January. The hotel promptly investigated the incident and discovered the presence of bedbugs in the room. The room was then treated and taken out of service. However, Caesars Palace has not yet responded to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment.

A guest at Sahara Las Vegas also encountered a bedbug sighting in September 2022. According to the complaint, the guest squished the bug and was alarmed by the amount of blood. The hotel confirmed the presence of bedbugs in the original room and subsequently treated it. The guest was relocated to another room. The Sahara has not yet replied to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment.

Inspectors validated a guest’s bedbug complaint at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in June. However, the hotel operator has not responded to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment.

Circus Circus had bedbugs found in a guest room in January 2022, following a guest’s complaint. Bedbugs reappeared in June, in response to another guest’s complaint. Circus Circus has not yet replied to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment.

At the Tropicana Las Vegas, a guest discovered bedbugs in their room in late January 2023. The guest was subsequently transferred to another room after the original room was treated. The complaint reveals that the treated room was rented out again. Tropicana Las Vegas did not immediately reply to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment.

While Bally’s Corp, the entertainment company that owns Tropicana Las Vegas, acknowledges the existence of bedbugs and follows preventive maintenance programs and regular inspections, MGM Resorts International claims to have only experienced a single bedbug incident over a year ago. MGM Resorts International assures that they have robust preventative measures and response protocols in place.

In response to bedbug complaints, the hotels follow a protocol that involves moving the guest to a new room and isolating the affected room and its surroundings. A third-party expert inspects the guest quarters, and if bedbugs are found, the affected room and nearby rooms undergo thorough cleaning to eliminate the problem.

There were additional complaints at different resorts, but inspectors did not find any pests.

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) acknowledges that bedbugs often find their way into hotels by hitching rides on guests’ luggage or clothing. The AHLA advises hotel guests to inspect their rooms for pests before settling in. This includes checking for stains or spots on mattress seams, behind the headboard, and in sofas and chairs.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene recommends travelers to be alert for signs of bedbugs, such as small bugs the size of apple seeds, live or dead bugs, small bloodstains, dark spots from droppings, and bedbug remains in various areas.

Overall, these incidents highlight the importance of proactive measures and regular inspections to prevent and address bedbug infestations in hotels.
