Landslide Prompts Local Emergency Declaration in Rolling Hills Estates

In response to a landslide that has caused several homes to collapse, a total of 17 homes in Rolling Hills Estates remain under evacuation orders. The City Council has declared a local emergency in the Palos Verdes Peninsula neighborhood. The cause of the landslide remains unknown.

Over the weekend, 12 homes along Peartree Lane were deemed unsuitable for habitation and red-tagged due to the landslide. An additional five homes were red-tagged on Tuesday due to a sewer line rupture caused by the shifting land.

Assistant City Manager Alexa Davis has stated that county fire officials are closely monitoring other homes in the area to prevent further shifting.

The Rolling Hills Estates City Council unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday night, declaring a local emergency in response to the slide. The resolution will allow the city to request resources and financial support from the State Office of Emergency Services and Federal Emergency Management Agency to cover the costs of responding to this emergency.

A $125,000 fund has been announced to assist affected residents with costs such as temporary housing, food, and other essentials. County Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office contributed $100,000 to the fund, with an additional $25,000 from the city of Rolling Hills Estates.

During a meeting with affected residents, county Assessor Jeff Prang assured them that they would not be responsible for hefty property tax bills for their destroyed homes. The county will expedite the reassessment process to prevent this burden.

Prang’s office also mentioned that residents could file for additional relief under the Misfortune & Calamity program, which would provide refunds of taxes already paid and lower annual tax bills for damaged properties.

Despite the efforts to assist affected residents, many homeowners have witnessed their houses collapse and sink into the turf. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone stated that fire crews are waiting for the homes to stop sliding or shifting before taking further action.

Once the homes stabilize, the homeowners association can bring in geologists and soil experts to examine the area and determine the cause of the landslide.

Authorities have turned off electricity in the area, and utility crews have ensured that gas and power lines are not disrupted. The American Red Cross is assisting evacuated families in finding shelter.

No injuries have been reported, and County Supervisor Janice Hahn plans to reach out to Gov. Gavin Newsom to request his involvement and possibly invite him to tour the neighborhood.
