Lancaster Store’s Use of Force to be Investigated by Sheriff’s Department

A video captured by a bystander shows Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies apprehending a man and a woman suspected of robbing a grocery store in Lancaster. This footage has prompted an investigation into the department’s use of force.

The video was brought to the attention of the department after deputies from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station responded to a reported robbery in progress on June 24th. Upon arrival, the deputies encountered a man and a woman who matched the description of the suspects provided by store security personnel who had called 911.

During the attempted detainment of the suspects, the situation escalated and led to the use of force by the deputies, as reported by the sheriff’s department.

While the department refrains from making statements regarding ongoing investigations, they emphasized that Sheriff Robert Luna expects all personnel to treat members of the public with dignity and respect. Those who fail to uphold the department’s training standards will face accountability.

The investigation will involve reviewing the body-worn camera footage from the encounter, as well as surveillance video from the store and cellphone video provided by a community member. The department intends to release the body-worn camera video.

Both deputies involved in the incident have been reassigned from field duty pending further administrative review. The department is committed to thoroughly establishing the facts of the incident and takes the use of force very seriously.
