Lady Gaga is requesting the dismissal of a lawsuit brought against her by Jennifer McBride, who was previously arrested for stealing two of the singer’s French bulldogs in 2021. McBride is seeking to collect on the $500,000 reward that Lady Gaga offered for the safe return of her pets. The plaintiff alleges that the singer defrauded her into surrendering the dogs by promising no questions would be asked upon their return. However, Lady Gaga’s attorneys claim that McBride was part of a conspiracy to steal the animals, and that “the law does not allow a person to commit a crime and then profit from it.”
The theft occurred on February 24, 2021, when Lady Gaga’s dog walker, Ryan Fischer, was shot and two of the singer’s dogs were stolen. McBride returned the pets to the Los Angeles Police Department two days later after Lady Gaga tweeted the reward offer. However, the singer’s attorneys maintain that McBride was a “direct and knowing participant in the criminal enterprise” and was later charged with knowingly receiving stolen property.
McBride is suing Lady Gaga for breach of contract, fraud by false promise, and fraud by misrepresentation, and seeks legal fees and compensation for financial damages and emotional distress. The plaintiff alleges that Lady Gaga never intended to pay the reward, but Lady Gaga’s attorneys argue that McBride performed her obligation under the reward contract and is attempting to profit from a crime. A hearing on Lady Gaga’s dismissal motion is scheduled for July 10.
