The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously supports a resolution in support of Israel and condemns terrorist acts of Hamas amidst criticism from residents who view it as endorsing an Israeli “genocide” of Palestinians.
The adopted resolution unequivocally condemns Hamas for its attack on Israel and asserts the county’s unwavering support for Israel’s right to exist as a sovereign nation with recognized borders.
Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, who introduced the motion alongside Supervisor Kathryn Barger, emphasizes the county’s commitment to opposing hatred in all forms and acknowledges the potential for violence and antisemitism to spread from the Middle East to other parts of the world.
“We stand in solidarity with every Jewish person in Los Angeles affected by terrorism from Hamas,” says Horvath. She prays for a resolution that brings justice and peace to the region.
Israeli Consul General in Los Angeles Israel Bachar expresses gratitude to the board for its solidarity, likening the current situation to the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.
“We are devastated but determined. In 1939, we couldn’t defend ourselves. In 2023, we can and we will,” he declares.
He clarifies that the issue at hand is terrorism, not territory, and urges listeners to stand strong with Israel as an act of defense for the security of America and Los Angeles County.
However, during the public-comment period, numerous speakers criticize the board for the one-sided nature of the resolution, arguing that it disregards the Palestinians’ plight and the casualties caused by Israeli bombings in response to Hamas attacks.
These speakers refuse to let their grief be weaponized to justify the murder of Palestinians and accuse Israel of carrying out a genocide under the guise of countering terrorism.
Opponents of the resolution also bring up an alleged air strike on a Gaza City hospital during the board’s hearing, claiming it killed hundreds of people. Israeli officials deny any involvement in the incident.
They assert that the resolution effectively grants Israel a blank check to commit violent acts against innocent Palestinians and urge the board to reject it in favor of calling for a cease-fire and an end to violence for all parties involved.
One speaker emphasizes the need to value the lives of both Palestinians and Israelis and calls for a consideration of the innocent victims on all sides.
Supervisor Holly Mitchell expresses her continued support for the original resolution but later introduces a separate motion demanding an immediate de-escalation of military activity and the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Her comments fail to appease opponents, leading to disruptions and the board having to take multiple recesses before ultimately approving the Israel resolution.
Towards the end of the meeting, Mitchell proposes a motion calling for adherence to international humanitarian law and the protection of Palestinian and Israeli civilians, as well as urging the Biden Administration to facilitate the entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza. This motion is unanimously adopted.
