The father of Dijon Kizzee, a 29-year-old Black man fatally shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies in 2020, has tentatively reached a settlement in a lawsuit that alleged excessive force and the existence of deputy gangs. The plaintiff, Edwin Kizzee, and the estate of Dijon Kizzee filed court papers notifying Compton Superior Court Judge Fumiko Wasserman of the conditional agreement, subject to the county Claims Board’s approval. The defense attorneys denied any wrongdoing or liability on the county’s part and claimed that the deputies acted “in good faith and without malicious intent.” The lawsuit declared civil rights violations, assault and battery, false imprisonment, negligence, and maintained the involvement of “rogue deputy gangs” within the sheriff’s department created an environment that led to Dijon Kizzee’s death. The deputies shot Kizzee while he was biking on the wrong side of East 110th Street, which they initiated for no apparent reason. They claimed that Kizzee dropped a gun before picking it up and pointing it toward them, prompting them to fire 19 times, while the plaintiff’s attorneys refuted the claim. The plaintiff’s lawyers further alleged that the deputies delayed getting Kizzee medical assistance. Edwin Kizzee believed that each of the deputies were members of gang-like cliques that have infected the patrol station. The lawsuit claimed that county officials knew or should have known about the gang-like culture but failed to rid the department of it. The tentative settlement’s terms are unknown.
