The sentencing hearing for a Los Angeles County man convicted of robbing three banks during a six-day crime spree while on supervised release for previous bank robbery convictions has been postponed. A new date has not yet been set.
Rickey Lewis, a 54-year-old resident of Willowbrook, pleaded guilty last year to three counts of bank robbery and one count of attempted bank robbery, as confirmed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
According to his plea agreement, Lewis committed the crimes in January 2019. He successfully stole a total of $4,035 in cash from two JPMorgan Chase bank branches in Gardena and one International City Bank branch in Long Beach. Lewis also attempted to rob a Bank of America branch in Downey.
During the robberies, Lewis threatened bank tellers with the possibility of a firearm, although he was not seen carrying one. He had clear tape on his fingers, which added to the intimidation. Fearful of their lives, the bank tellers complied and handed over the cash, as documented in court papers.
Affidavits filed in Los Angeles federal court, along with a criminal complaint, revealed that law enforcement found a partial palm print from the Long Beach bank robbery that matched Lewis’ palm print.
At the time of the spree, Lewis was on supervised release for previous bank robbery convictions stemming from his guilty plea in February 2006. During that month-long period, he robbed six banks in South Los Angeles and Inglewood.
If convicted, Lewis could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison for each count, according to prosecutors.
