LA Council District 6 Special Election Comes to a Close on Tuesday

Don’t miss the Tuesday deadline for voting in the special election for the Sixth District City Council seat. The race is between Imelda Padilla and Marisa Alcaraz. This seat was vacated when former Council President Nury Martinez resigned.

In the first round of voting on April 4, Padilla, a community relations manager, received 25.65% of the vote, while Alcaraz, a City Council aide, received 21.13%, each leading the field of seven candidates. However, since neither candidate achieved a majority, a runoff between Padilla and Alcaraz is necessary.

Padilla’s main focus is finding an immediate solution to the homelessness crisis. She plans to propose an emergency remediation of encampments and connect unhoused individuals to essential services such as housing, employment, and healthcare. Padilla aims to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to create safer, sanitary, and sustainable communities.

With several endorsements from labor unions and coalitions, Alcaraz emphasizes the importance of conducting thorough research on campaign supporters and urges voters to make informed decisions. She recognizes the council’s significant impact on various aspects of daily life and encourages active participation in this low-turnout election.

Alcaraz’s top priority is assisting the homeless population in finding stable housing and receiving essential care. She plans to invest in outreach teams, including professionals in nursing and mental health, and proposes using existing government property to construct temporary shelters and lease vacant buildings for immediate housing solutions. Alcaraz also envisions a Homeless Navigation Center equipped with comprehensive services.

Remember, voters in the Sixth District can cast their ballots from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at several designated locations. Alternatively, registered voters can use the 14 available vote-by-mail drop boxes until 8 p.m. on election day. Eligible residents who missed the registration deadline can still vote by taking advantage of conditional voter registration at any vote center.

The winner of this special election will complete Nury Martinez’s term, which concludes in December 2024.
