In addition, Holden played a pivotal role in changing the restrictions that previously prevented women from obtaining mortgages without a male co-signer. His progressive stance on gender equality helped open doors for women in the realm of housing finance.
In 1987, Holden was elected by the voters of L.A. city to represent District 10, a responsibility he fulfilled until 2002. Councilwoman Heather Hutt, who represents Council District 10, affectionately referred to Holden as the “Chief.” Hutt praised him as a visionary who divided the district into grids to ensure constituents received efficient services, epitomizing his service-mindedness.
Hutt also acknowledged Holden’s remarkable dedication to serving others, his urgent need to make a difference, and his transformative contributions on the global stage. Council President Paul Krekorian further underscored Holden’s significance by acknowledging that his advocacy led California to become the first state in the nation to officially recognize Martin Luther King Jr. and establish a holiday in his honor. This decision set a precedent for the rest of the country to celebrate the civil rights leader.
Holden’s tireless efforts also led to the prohibition of realistic toy gun production, which had tragically resulted in the deaths of numerous young individuals who were innocent victims of misguided play. Krekorian applauded Holden for his astute recognition of the issue and his unwavering commitment to solving it.
Councilman Harris-Dawson concluded the ceremony by presenting Holden with a well-deserved plaque, expressing gratitude for his invaluable service to the people. As a testament to his legacy, the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center, located at 4718 W. Washington Blvd., proudly bears his name.
