LA City Council’s Historic Decision on Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood Home Preservation

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to designate Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood home as a historic-cultural monument, thus preventing its demolition.

In a 12-0 vote, the council members supported Councilwoman Traci Park’s motion to save the iconic property. Council members Heather Hutt, Eunisses Hernandez, and Curren Price were absent during the vote.

This motion was introduced by Councilwoman Traci Park, who represents the 11th District that includes Monroe’s home. Utilizing Rule 23, a state law allowing immediate action on agenda items, Park was able to expedite the process.

According to Park, a demolition permit had already been approved before her team had a chance to address the issue. The permit was issued on Thursday, authorizing the demolition of the single-family dwelling, attached garage, pool house, and storage. It is currently unknown when the demolition was scheduled to take place.

Park held a press conference on Friday morning, announcing the effort to save Monroe’s home from destruction.

“This significant move highlights the city of Los Angeles’ dedication to preserving its rich history and ensuring that iconic landmarks and pivotal moments continue to inspire future generations,” stated Councilwoman Park’s office.

The owners of the 1920s-era property, which Monroe purchased in the early 1960s and tragically passed away in at the young age of 36, had plans to demolish it.

Glory of the Snow LLC, managed by hedge fund manager Dan Lukas, purchased the property for $7.25 million in 2017. Subsequently, it was sold to Glory of the Snow Trust for $8.35 million earlier this year. The reason behind the owner’s decision to demolish the home remains unclear.

The news of the impending demolition sparked outrage among local history enthusiasts and devoted Marilyn Monroe fans.

Councilwoman Park shared that her office received hundreds of calls from concerned individuals this week, all urging her to save the historic property.

“Marilyn Monroe was more than just a film icon for people all over the world,” Park emphasized. “Her story of overcoming adversity, from her challenging childhood in orphanages and foster homes to her rise as a global sensation, serves as an inspiration.”
