Archbishop José Gomez will impart his blessings to nearly 100 pilgrims on Sunday as they embark on their journey from Los Angeles to World Youth Day in Lisbon. This year’s event holds special significance as it marks the first iteration of the worldwide gathering since the onset of the pandemic. Pope Francis is also scheduled to participate in several sessions alongside the young attendees.
The upcoming pilgrimage will bring together teenagers, young adults, and adults, who will join an anticipated quarter-million Catholics in the celebration of World Youth Day. The event spans multiple days, from August 1st to August 6th.
The blessing from Archbishop Gomez will take place during a 10 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.
“In these challenging times, when our human family, already burdened by the trauma of the pandemic, is further afflicted by the tragedy of war, Mary exemplifies the path of closeness and encounter to all, particularly young individuals,” expressed Pope Francis in a message to the youth.
“I hope and firmly believe that the experience you will have in Lisbon this August will mark a new beginning not only for you, the young people, but also for humanity as a whole.”
World Youth Day was established by Pope John Paul II in December 1985, with the inaugural celebration taking place in 1986. It has since become one of the church’s prominent events and the world’s largest gathering of young people.
The event offers a transformative pilgrimage experience designed for individuals between the ages of 16 and 35, providing them with an opportunity to deepen their faith.
Among the highlights is a meeting on August 3rd between the pope and college students from the Catholic Portuguese University, followed by a session with young members of the pontifical organization, Scholas Ocurrentes.
On August 5th, the young attendees will have the chance to spend time with the pope during an evening prayer vigil at Parque do Tejo (Tejo Park), preceded by a rosary prayer with ill young people at the Chapel of Apparitions of the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Fatima.
The events associated with World Youth Day will culminate with a morning mass on August 6th at Tejo Park.
