MANILA, Philippines—Kyrie Irving has been creating excitement among basketball fans as rumors of a potential sneaker deal with Anta circulate.
The Dallas Mavericks guard recently sparked discussions on social media after being spotted wearing the Anta Shock Wave Pro 5 during his annual basketball camp, as well as an Anta hoodie during a visit to the Drew League.
NBA reporter Brandon Robinson confirmed that Irving has not yet signed a deal and is currently in his sneaker free agency.
Anta, the Chinese brand, has also not made an official announcement regarding the signing of the 31-year-old point guard.
Irving himself revealed in a recent Instagram live video that he will be signing a new shoe deal “very, very soon.”
Although Irving has been a sneaker free agent for the past seven months, he continued to wear his Nike signature shoes with the Swoosh logo covered up for the remainder of the 2023 season.
Nike ended its 12-year partnership with Irving, an eight-time NBA All-star, after canceling his ninth signature sneaker last December due to an antisemitic social media post.
If Irving does sign with Anta, he will join fellow NBA stars Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors and Gordon Hayward of the Charlotte Hornets, who both have signature lines with the brand.
Additionally, Irving is set to become an NBA free agent on June 30, amidst the Mavericks’ plans to re-sign him to a long-term contract.
In his first season with the Mavericks, Irving played alongside Luka Doncic but the team failed to make the playoffs with a record of 38-44.
