The Hawaii Department of Health has announced its endorsement of the latest federal guidelines recommending an additional dose of the bivalent COVID-19 booster for those at increased risk. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has approved a second bivalent booster for individuals aged 65 and over, as well as additional doses for people with compromised immune systems. Individuals who have not yet received the original, monovalent COVID vaccines, which are no longer recommended by the CDC for use in the US, can now receive the updated bivalent vaccine. State Epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Kemble emphasized the importance of getting a booster dose now to protect oneself and loved ones from severe COVID-19 illness and death, particularly for kupuna and immunocompromised individuals. The CDC recommendations align with the US FDA’s approval of simplified vaccination schedules for most individuals receiving the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNtech COVID-19 bivalent mRNA vaccines. The Hawaii DOH has notified all COVID-19 vaccine providers in the state of the updated FDA authorization changes. The CDC’s updated recommendations are available on its website and include second bivalent vaccine booster doses for adults aged 65 and older, additional bivalent vaccine booster doses for immunocompromised individuals, and updated bivalent vaccines for individuals aged 6 and over who have not yet received them. Finally, the monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are no longer recommended for use in the US. DOH Director Dr. Kenneth Fink reminded residents that Hawaii’s lower COVID mortality rates were, in part, due to following guidelines, including receiving vaccinations and boosters as recommended.
