During a recent event in New Mexico, President Biden made an unintelligible joke about hibernating in Iowa. It’s unclear what he meant, but it seems fitting for the Biden 2024 re-election campaign.
While Biden faced mockery for campaigning from his basement in 2020, this summer he seems to be campaigning from the beach. While he enjoyed his weekend on Maui, serious presidential contenders were rallying support at the Iowa State Fair. This is just one of several signs that Biden may not be planning to run for re-election next year.
Skeleton Crew – Although Biden has started hiring fundraisers for his 2024 campaign, his operation is a small group of staff members working exclusively in his home state of Delaware. This keeps them close to his homes near Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, but far from swing states or the nation’s capital.
As of the last quarter, Biden only had four people on the payroll, all working from party offices. In July, the campaign hired a few fundraisers, but there seems to be little urgency to launch a full-scale campaign with the first primary votes just five months away.
BIDEN’S FRUGAL RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN SPENDING LESS THAN HOUSE, SENATE CANDIDATES
Strategic Travel – After spending part of the summer abroad, Biden is in vacation mode for the month of August. Instead of attending the important Iowa State Fair, he chose to travel to Utah. While Utah welcomes the president, it is not a battleground state. A serious candidate would have campaigned in Nevada, Colorado, and Montana.
He did visit northern Arizona, where he referred to the Grand Canyon as one of the “nine wonders” and made comments about “ironic” species. With the election approaching, these gaffes do not help expand his support base in critical Arizona and may even polarize voters.
Where Is Kamala? – Vice President Kamala Harris has been largely absent throughout the first three years of the Biden presidency. Unless she makes a gaffe, she rarely makes headlines. There is talk of deploying her to target specific demographic groups during the campaign, but as of now, she has not been seen much on the trail.
Her portfolio is limited. She is nowhere to be found when it comes to solving the immigration and human trafficking crisis, and her supposed work on AI is questionable. It remains to be seen if she is capable of leading in this emerging technology.
Fiddling While Maui Burns – Biden’s nonchalant response to the Maui fires while he was on vacation raised eyebrows across the nation. Did he truly have nothing to say to the people fighting for their lives while he enjoyed the beach? This was an opportunity for a president to show leadership. Despite claims of action, reports from Maui describe aid being blocked, properties being looted, and FEMA being absent.
Hibernating over Hunter – With substantial evidence emerging that President Biden’s son received payments from foreign entities in exchange for access to his father, the campaign seems to be shutting down.

The New York Times reported that campaign manager Julie Chavez canceled an interview on MSNBC to avoid facing questions about Hunter Biden. Upon Biden’s return from Rehoboth Beach, reporters were kept at a distance, preventing him from hearing their shouted questions as he turned his back on them.
While this could be seen as a deliberate campaign strategy, it is more likely that Biden will not run for re-election.

With few exceptions, we do not see Biden on the campaign trail defending his presidency or highlighting his accomplishments in key battleground states. His vice president is not making a compelling case for him either. He is hiding – avoiding the press, scandals, and his own incompetence as commander in chief.
By the end of this year, it is expected that he will not be a candidate in 2024.
