Key observations from Washington’s preseason victory against the Ravens

2. Sluggish Start for the Defense.

The Commanders have been struggling with slow starts for quite some time. The coaching staff is determined to fix this issue in 2023, but Monday’s game highlighted that there is still work to be done in that area.

The Commanders’ defense initially faced little resistance as they allowed Josh Johnson and the Ravens’ offense to easily march down the field on their opening drive. Missed tackles, exemplified by Emmanuel Forbes’ error on Zay Flowers, were abundant. Additionally, players took poor angles in pursuit of the ball-carriers. Consequently, Baltimore made significant progress and scored a 26-yard touchdown on their six-play, 75-yard opening drive.

Fortunately, the defense didn’t remain sluggish throughout the game. They managed to force a three-and-out on the subsequent drive, and in the second half, three out of the Ravens’ six drives ended in punts. All three of those drives covered less than 30 yards, and the third-down stop with three minutes remaining provided Washington with an opportunity to win the game.

It’s important to note that most of Washington’s starting defense did not play a single snap on Monday night, so the lapses in coverage were not representative of the entire unit. However, it’s evident that the defensive depth still has much to learn.
