Kepa Arrizabalaga, Chelsea’s goalkeeper, moves to Real Madrid on a temporary loan

Kepa Arrizabalaga, the renowned goalkeeper who joined Chelsea in a groundbreaking deal in 2018, has now embarked on a season-long loan to Real Madrid. The 28-year-old Spanish international, whose initial contract with Chelsea was valued at £71.6 million, is set to remain at the Bernabeu until June of next year.

Real Madrid sought a new goalkeeper after Thibaut Courtois suffered an ACL injury, ruling him out for the majority of the season. A statement on Real’s official website confirmed the loan, stating, “Real Madrid CF and Chelsea FC have reached an agreement for the loan of player Kepa Arrizabalaga, who will be joining the club for this season until June 30, 2024.”

During his five seasons at Chelsea, Kepa has already achieved considerable success, winning titles such as the Champions League, Club World Cup, European Super Cup, and Europa League. Additionally, he received recognition as the recipient of the Premier League’s Best Save Award for the 2022-2023 season. Kepa also boasts an impressive international record, having been part of the Spanish team that clinched victory in the 2023 Nations League. Furthermore, he played a key role in securing the U19 European Championship title for Spain in 2012.

Kepa will be officially introduced as a Real Madrid player during a presentation on Tuesday afternoon. His return to Spain coincides with the recent arrival of fellow countryman Robert Sanchez at Stamford Bridge. Sanchez, 25 years old, made a £25 million move from Brighton earlier this month and was in the starting lineup for Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday. Lucas Bergstrom, a young player, provided backup on the bench.

Having amassed 163 appearances for Chelsea, Kepa was even entrusted with the captaincy last season. However, under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, he has been deemed surplus to requirements, leading to his season-long loan to Real Madrid. During his time at the Spanish club, Kepa will have the opportunity to work with former Chelsea head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Chelsea’s official website issued a statement, wishing Kepa well in his new venture, stating, “Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has completed a season-long loan move to LaLiga side Real Madrid. The club wish him well for the season ahead in Madrid, where he will work with former Chelsea head coach Carlo Ancelotti.”
