The question of whether Texas state Senator Angela Paxton would attend the impeachment trial of her husband has finally been answered. She has confirmed that she will be present. In her statement, the 60-year-old Republican senator emphasized that she will fulfill her duties not because they are easy, but because the Constitution demands it and her constituents deserve it.

However, attending the trial does not necessarily mean participating in the vote against her husband. Angela Paxton’s statement did not address whether she will recuse herself from that portion. Since her husband’s impeachment by a Republican-controlled House of Representatives, she has remained silent. According to the Texas constitution, legislators with a personal interest in certain cases are expected to recuse themselves.

Angela Paxton will be witnessing her husband face 20 articles of impeachment, including allegations of bribery, abuse of public trust, obstruction of justice, and whistleblower retaliation. One particular accusation that may cause discomfort for Angela Paxton is that her husband allegedly used his influence to help a woman he had an affair with secure a job through an Austin real estate investor. If Ken Paxton is convicted, needing a two-thirds vote from the state Senate, he will be permanently barred from holding office in Texas.
