Keisha Buchanan of Sugababes Describes Music Industry’s “Gut-Wrenching” Harshness

Buchanan, who joined the Sugababes as a teenager alongside Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy, recently spoke to Channel 4 News about their experiences as young pop stars and addressed the issue of gender dynamics in the music industry. Despite the band’s numerous lineup changes over the years, Buchanan remains the only original member, having been replaced by Jade Ewen in 2009.

Reflecting on the scrutiny faced by women, Buchanan expressed her frustration, particularly noting the added pressure on women of color. She emphasized the harsh treatment and how it has been emotionally challenging. Additionally, she touched on the issue of artists, not just women, being treated as if they are unintelligent. She recalled a past statement made about the Sugababes, which reinforced the perception that the industry is primarily controlled by men. Buchanan believes that artists need to have a strong sense of self and surround themselves with the right team to navigate the industry successfully.

Donaghy, who left the Sugababes in 2001, shared her experiences of entering the industry at a young age. Coming from a working-class background with non-industry parents, they had to face many challenges they were not prepared for. As their success grew, they encountered individuals looking to exploit them. However, Donaghy pointed out that their extensive experience has made them better prepared to handle such situations and enjoy themselves in the industry.

Buena, another former member, expressed her concerns about young stars facing the industry’s dark underbelly, stating that she would not allow her child to enter the industry at such a young age due to the presence of opportunistic individuals. Despite this, the band recently reunited for a performance at the Glastonbury Festival in 2022 and is gearing up for a show at The O2 in London. They also performed at the British Summer Time (BST) Hyde Park festival in July.

The Sugababes’ full interview will be broadcast on Channel 4 at 7 pm on Friday.
