July 25 (UPI) — In a thrilling finish, Katie Ledecky emerged victorious in the 1,500-meter freestyle race, clocking in at 15:26.27, a remarkable 17.04 seconds ahead of Simona Quadarella. This triumph not only secured Ledecky’s 15th individual world aquatics championship title but also allowed her to equal the record previously set by her idol, swimming legend Michael Phelps. After the race, Ledecky expressed her admiration for Phelps, emphasizing their shared Maryland roots. She then reflected on her incredible achievement, acknowledging the honor of winning a medal for Team USA and vowing to continue to give her best in every competition.

The race constituted another milestone in Ledecky’s career, as it added to her already impressive tally of 20 combined individual and relay world titles, the highest ever achieved by a female swimmer.

Finishing in second place was Quadarella from Italy, with a time of 15:43.31, followed closely by China’s Bingjie Li, who finished in third place with a time of 15:45.71.

Ledecky’s remarkable career includes a collection of Olympic gold medals and multiple triumphs in previous world championships. She won three individual titles and a relay title in the 2013 world championships, followed by four more individual titles in 2015. In 2017, she secured another trio of world gold medals. Further adding to her achievements, Ledecky claimed a gold in the 800-meter freestyle in 2019 and clinched three individual world titles in 2022.

Ledecky now has the opportunity to surpass Phelps’ record in the upcoming 800-meter freestyle final on Saturday in Fukuoka.

Katie Ledecky made her impact on the swimming world at the young age of 15, qualifying for the final of the Women’s 800M Freestyle at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London with a time of 8:23.84 in her heat.
