The former Strictly Come Dancing judge has opened up about a traumatic event in his life during an episode of Life Stories hosted by Kate Garraway. Anton Du Beke revealed that he spent three days in the hospital after being stabbed in the stomach and leg on Boxing Day while living at his family home in Kent.
Before viewing the episode, Garraway spoke on The One Show and commended Du Beke for his resilience and refusal to let the incident define him. She noted that during his time as a dancer, he wanted to be judged solely on his talent and not pitied for his past.
Du Beke decided to share his story with Garraway to inspire others who may have gone through similar experiences. He aimed to use his platform for good and shed light on the issue. Garraway expressed her pride in Du Beke’s bravery and predicted that the episode would be an unexpected and captivating watch.
Born to a Spanish mother and Hungarian father, Du Beke grew up in a council estate in Sevenoaks. He discovered his passion for dancing when he accompanied his sister to the local dance studio. While his mother supported his new hobby, his father’s battle with alcoholism caused him to turn against Du Beke.
Garraway mentioned that Du Beke’s family, including his wife, were unaware of the abuse he endured. However, he reached a point where he realized he should not feel shame and decided to share his story.
The 57-year-old had a long tenure as a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing before transitioning to the judging panel. He has partnered with various celebrities over the years and is also an accomplished author with several published novels. In addition, Du Beke is embarking on a solo tour called “An Audience With Anton Du Beke.”
Kate Garraway’s Life Stories featuring Anton Du Beke airs on ITV1 and ITVX on Wednesday at 9 pm. The show also includes interviews with actor Omid Djalili and Ruby Wax.
