The sheriff’s office has released bodycam and dashcam footage of the incident, which shows the deputy pulling over Leonard Cure for speeding and reckless driving on I-95.
Initially compliant with the deputy’s commands, Leonard Cure then refuses to be arrested and put his hands behind his back. Subsequently, the deputy threatens to use a Taser on him.
“Why am I getting Tased?” questions Leonard Cure in the video.
“Because you are under arrest for speeding and reckless driving,” replies the deputy.
“I’m not driving. Nobody was hurt, so how was I speeding?” argues Leonard Cure.
“You passed me doing 100 miles per hour,” claims the deputy.

At the time of making her statement, Mary Cure had not yet seen the video. She asserts, “I don’t know what happened out there, but I can tell you this: there was nothing so severe that he deserved to die.”
Leonard Cure, who was wrongfully convicted and spent 16 years in Florida prisons before being exonerated and released in 2020, had recently moved to metro Atlanta for a fresh start.
According to attorney Ben Crump, Leonard Cure’s psychological state was impacted by the years spent behind bars for a crime he did not commit.

Mary Cure recounts that her son had just left Florida after spending the weekend with her. They had a video chat as he made his way back home.
“Then he said, ‘I love you and I’ll see you soon.’ That’s the last I heard from him,” she sorrowfully adds.
Leonard Cure received over $800,000 from the state of Florida for his wrongful conviction.
While Leonard Cure’s family believes that the deputy could have de-escalated the situation, a law enforcement expert argues that Leonard Cure was in the process of causing serious injury to the deputy, leaving him with no other choice but to use force for self-defense.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently conducting an inquiry into the case.
