Juneteenth May Be Considered as a Holiday for City Employees by LA

On Friday, the Los Angeles City Council will deliberate over adding Juneteenth, a significant day marking the end of slavery in the United States, as an official holiday for non-represented city employees and those represented by specific labor organizations. The council will evaluate whether to authorize, for June 19th and the following years, contract amendments with city employees and codify Juneteenth as an official holiday. Presently, the city code consists of 12 legal holidays, and a day or a part of a legal holiday can be declared by the mayor with a council resolution. In 2020, former Mayor Eric Garcetti recognized Juneteenth as a legal city holiday, and the city memorialized it in December 2022 through contract deliberations with city employees comprising the Coalition of City Unions. The word “Juneteenth” merges the words “June” and “nineteenth” commemorating the day the enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, were enlightened about their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and two months following the end of the Civil War. In June 2021, President Joe Biden endorsed legislation designating Juneteenth as a federal holiday. As of last year, 24 states and the District of Columbia honored Juneteenth as a public holiday.
