The search for actor Julian Sands, who disappeared during a hike in Southern California five months ago, will continue with limited resources, authorities announced on Monday. Despite the efforts of over 80 Search and Rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff, as well as the support of helicopters and drones, no signs of Sands were found. This marks the eighth unsuccessful search conducted by the sheriff’s department this year. While the missing person case remains active, the department’s search efforts are now being scaled back.
The search for Sands, known for his role in “Room With a View,” began in January but was hindered by inclement weather. The Mount Baldy area, where Sands vanished, is still covered in feet of snow and ice. In February, the department promised to bring closure to Sands’ family, who expressed gratitude towards the search teams. However, Sands’ brother, Nick Sands, fears his brother will not be found but hopes to be proven wrong due to their sibling rivalry.
Sands’ best friend and frequent collaborator, John Malkovich, described him as an experienced hiker who enjoyed solo expeditions. Malkovich speculated that the specific conditions on Mount Baldy that day may have led to an irreversible error. Despite the solitude and solace Sands found in his hikes, the circumstances may have been too overwhelming.
The sheriff’s department has conducted multiple rescue missions this past winter, helping hikers in the Mount Baldy area. Unfortunately, there have been fatalities, including a mother of four who fell to her death shortly before Sands disappeared. As a result, the department is working with legislators to implement a strict permitting process for hiking in the area.
