Judge Suggests Possible Reversal of Jury’s Punitive Damage Award Against Rapper

A judge has indicated that he may invalidate a jury’s decision to award $235,900 in punitive damages to a woman who accused Soulja Boy of physically assaulting her during a party at his Malibu home in 2019. The woman, Kayla Christine Myers, claimed that Soulja Boy yelled profanities, kicked her, stomped on her stomach, and hit her head with a large gun.

Judge Mark H. Epstein of Santa Monica Superior Court expressed concern during a post-trial hearing that there was no evidence presented by Myers regarding the singer’s financial situation. The judge’s clerk noted that this lack of evidence should have prevented the issue from going to the jury. A hearing to address this issue is scheduled for July 21.

The jury also awarded Myers $235,900 in compensatory damages, with $1,800 designated for her pain and suffering. As the panel found that Soulja Boy acted with malicious intent, a second phase of the trial was conducted to determine whether punitive damages should be awarded.

Myers claimed that Soulja Boy, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, held a gun to her head and threatened her on the night of February 1, 2019. She further alleged that the rapper instructed his assistant to tie her up with duct tape in the garage and later dragged her by her hair inside the house, where she was forced to take showers. She was left in the garage for four hours under the supervision of the assistant and another man.

In January 2020, Myers filed a lawsuit, stating that she eventually managed to leave and was hospitalized with three fractured ribs and a facial contusion. Soulja Boy has denied the allegations, asserting that Myers was the aggressor in her encounter with the assistant.
