A federal judge in Florida has announced plans to hold a sealed hearing to discuss prosecutors’ request for an order to protect classified material in a criminal case against former President Donald Trump. Judge Aileen Cannon, of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, stated that the hearing, which will focus on sensitive, security-related issues regarding classified discovery, will not be open to the public.

The specifics of when and where the sealed hearing will take place have not been disclosed in the order.

However, Cannon made it clear that Trump and his co-defendants, Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, are not required to attend the hearing.

Trump is facing charges in the Southern District of Florida for crimes related to the retention of classified government records after leaving office and attempts to conceal the fact that he kept these documents at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach.

Trump’s valet, Nauta, and Mar-a-Lago maintenance worker, De Oliveira, are also accused of being involved in the cover-up. All defendants have pleaded not guilty.

Special counsel Jack Smith, who is prosecuting Trump, is requesting that Judge Cannon order that Trump and his defense lawyers be permitted to discuss classified information only within secure locations called sensitive compartmented information facilities (SCIFs).

Smith opposes Trump’s suggestion to build a SCIF at Mar-a-Lago or any of his other residences for this purpose.

In a recent court filing, Smith criticized Trump’s request, stating that he is seeking “special treatment that no other defendant would receive.”

“He is asking to be the only defendant ever in a case involving classified information (at least to the Government’s knowledge) who would be able to discuss classified information in a private residence,” Smith wrote in the filing.
