Judge Expresses Sympathy for Murdaugh

According to NBC, South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Clifton Newman, who presided over Alex Murdaugh’s murder trial and sentenced him to life in prison without parole for killing his wife and son, expressed some sympathy for the convicted murderer. In an interview with Today, Judge Newman stated, “I felt sorry for him,” adding that he believed Murdaugh was unable to resist falling into a dark place. The judge also mentioned that he wanted to give Murdaugh an opportunity to speak at his sentencing, but the defendant maintained his innocence instead of confessing.

Judge Newman, who plans to retire in the fall, admitted that he was not surprised by the intense media coverage the case received, given its elements of a high-profile lawyer, spousal and filial deaths, allegations of embezzlement, and accusations of drug addiction. He stated, “It had all the ingredients for something of major public interest.”

Echoing his previous statements during sentencing, Judge Newman believed that Murdaugh’s crimes would haunt him for the rest of his life. He remarked, “I cannot imagine him having a peaceful night, knowing what he did,” and expressed doubt that Murdaugh would repeat his actions if given the chance. Currently appealing his conviction, Murdaugh remains in protective custody at a maximum-security state prison, as reported by the State.
