Judge Accused of Murder Sends Coworker a Distressing Message: ‘I Just Shot My Wife’

  • A judge from California has been arrested and charged with the murder of his wife at their home in Orange County.
  • According to prosecutors, the judge sent text messages to his court clerk and bailiff confessing to the crime, saying, “I just shot my wife.”
  • During a search of the judge’s house, the police discovered 47 weapons and 26,000 rounds of ammunition.

A judge from Southern California has been charged with the murder of his wife after confessing to the crime in text messages sent to his court clerk and bailiff. The Orange County Superior Court Judge, Jeffrey Ferguson, allegedly texted, “I just lost it. I just shot my wife. I won’t be in tomorrow. I will be in custody. I’m so sorry.” The judge, aged 72, was arrested last week following a 911 call from his adult son reporting the shooting at their Anaheim Hills home.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement discovered the deceased body of Sheryl Ferguson, the judge’s 65-year-old wife, with at least one gunshot wound. A subsequent search of the judge’s residence uncovered a collection of 47 weapons, including rifles, shotguns, and handguns, along with over 26,000 rounds of ammunition. However, one registered .22 rifle is still missing.

The court documents suggest that an alleged gesture made by Ferguson earlier in the evening indicated a threat towards his wife, further supporting the claim that he used a Glock .40 to shoot her. Ferguson’s lawyers have yet to respond to inquiries regarding the incident. They issued a minimal statement asserting that the incident was an accident and expressing condolences to the entire Ferguson family.

The judge has been released on a $1 million bond with strict conditions

Ferguson has been charged with three counts, including felony murder, personal discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury and death, and personally using a firearm, according to court records. However, he has been released on a $1 million bond under the conditions that he refrains from using firearms and consuming alcohol.

The arrested judge has been serving since 2015 and specializes in criminal cases in Fullerton, Orange County. He began his legal career in the Orange County district attorney’s office in 1983 and has received multiple awards for his work on narcotics cases. In 2017, he faced disciplinary action for being friends with attorneys appearing in his court on Facebook and making false statements about a judicial candidate on the same platform.

Jeffrey Ferguson has shared on his Facebook page that he grew up in a military family and has traveled extensively throughout Asia during his childhood. He pursued higher education in California and tied the knot with his wife in 1996.
