Jordan Clarkson, the naturalized player for Gilas Pilipinas, arrived in Manila on Tuesday morning with high hopes for the upcoming Fiba World Cup. After a long 15-hour flight from Los Angeles, Clarkson expressed his optimism about the team’s chances and their goal of winning some games. He spoke to reporters at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 in Pasay City, where he landed aboard Philippine Airlines PR 103.
This will be Clarkson’s third time representing the Philippines, and he is excited to be at the forefront of Gilas as they compete in the global tournament starting on August 25. Head coach Chot Reyes mentioned in a previous interview that they have plans to reintegrate Clarkson into the team on Wednesday. The Gilas training squad is set to arrive from China later in the day after winning three out of four games in a pocket tournament against Senegal and Iran in Heyuan City.
Clarkson’s first stint with Gilas was during the Asian Games in Jakarta back in 2018, and he also played in the World Cup Asian Qualifiers around the same time last year. Before the Fiba World Cup, the Philippines will host friendlies against Montenegro and Mexico, and Clarkson is expected to participate, providing a glimpse of the final roster.
In Group A of the Fiba World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas will be facing the Dominican Republic, Angola, and Italy. This tournament also serves as a qualifying event for the Paris Olympics next year.
