Spanish professional golfer Jon Rahm showcased his talent by staging a remarkable comeback to win his third PGA Tour title in six starts at the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.
Despite an initial bogey on the first hole, Rahm impressively completed the final round with a score of 10-under-par 63.
Rahm finished the tournament at 27-under-par, securing a two-shot victory over Collin Morikawa, a two-time major winner.
Morikawa, who had a six-shot lead going into the final round, faltered with three bogeys on the back nine, resulting in a one-under-par 72 and allowing Rahm to close the gap.
Rahm commented, “I needed to play well and he needed to make a couple of mistakes.” (BBC)
Reflecting on his performance, Rahm admitted, “If you had told me after that bogey on the first hole that I would achieve what I did, I don’t know if I would have believed you.”
This victory marks Rahm’s eighth PGA Tour win and his triumph in the Tour’s first “designated” event, featuring an elevated purse introduced to rival LIV Golf’s growing prominence.
The Tournament of Champions is the first of 17 events this season, including the four majors, to have the “designated event” status. These events will offer a total purse of $15 million, with Rahm earning $2.7 million for his victory.
Most of the remaining designated tournaments will have total purses of at least $20 million, while the PLAYERS Championship will boast an impressive $25 million purse.
Despite Rahm’s triumph, Morikawa, who finished in second place, expressed his disappointment with his final round performance, although he did earn $1.5 million for his achievement.
Morikawa stated, “You work so hard and give yourself these opportunities.” (BBC)
Reflecting on his performance, Morikawa added, “I just made three poor swings at the wrong times. It’s never a good time to have a poor swing, but sometimes it works out, and unfortunately, it didn’t this time.”
Despite the disappointment, Morikawa acknowledged that his performance was not far off and expressed frustration with the outcome.
