Join us on Wednesday for the funeral procession and service honoring the life of Chad Swanson, an esteemed Manhattan Beach Police motorcycle officer tragically killed in a crash on the San Diego Freeway.
The funeral procession will commence at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday in Manhattan Beach, followed by a church service in Cypress.
In a show of unity and respect, personnel from the Manhattan Beach Police Department and city staff will march alongside the procession, while community members are encouraged to attend and wear red, white, and blue.
The procession will proceed on Manhattan Beach Boulevard between Ardmore Avenue and Aviation Boulevard, ultimately reaching SeaCoast Church in Cypress.
The funeral service will commence at 11 a.m. at the SeaCoast Church, located at 5100 Cerritos Ave.
Aged 35, Swanson was a dedicated police officer with 13 years of experience. Tragically, he passed away at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. Lieutenant Kelly Benjamin of the Manhattan Beach police revealed that Swanson leaves behind a loving wife and three young sons.
According to Manhattan Beach officials, Swanson was involved in the crash while en route to work on October 4th.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the crash involved three other vehicles. It is suspected that one driver was speeding and made an unsafe lane change, resulting in a collision that caused another vehicle to lose control.
Tragically, one of the vehicles struck Officer Swanson’s motorcycle, knocking him to the ground. He was rushed to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Another individual suffered minor injuries and was also transported to a hospital.
The other motorists remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, as reported by the CHP.
Details regarding which vehicle struck Officer Swanson remain unclear.
Police Chief Rachel Johnson of Manhattan Beach expressed her admiration for Swanson, stating, “Chad led a life committed to serving our community… his passion for his job radiated every time I saw him. I had the privilege of speaking to Chad on Sunday at the canine car show, witnessing how he delighted children by lifting them onto his motorcycle, allowing them to experience the joy of sitting on a police motorbike. He never grew weary of it. I believe he would have continued until sunset just to brighten every child’s day.
“Chad was a shining star in a world that can sometimes be dark. He embodied what I call a truly exceptional individual. His contagious smile and laughter would illuminate any room he entered. To know Chad was to love him. If you weren’t laughing when he was around, you simply weren’t paying attention.”
Manhattan Beach Mayor Richard Montgomery expressed his condolences, stating, “Our entire community grieves the loss of an officer who dedicated his career to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents.”
“His fearless contributions to our community and beyond were marked by bravery, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to duty,” Montgomery added.
