If any region exemplifies the blend of crisis, inertia, and possibility that climate change creates, it is Asia.
The floods and heatwaves that struck it this year — with China reporting a record temperature of 52C in July — were, according to scientists, all driven by climate change, which is caused in large part by the CO₂ emitted by fossil fuels.
Asia is the world’s largest CO₂ emitter, with a major contribution from the growing use of coal in power generation, known as the dirtiest fuel. However, governments in the region are also taking steps to address climate change, including the implementation of emissions trading schemes and support for renewable energy technology.
So, how are businesses in Asia responding to these climate change trends? The Financial Times and Statista are partnering to compile their third annual list of Asia-Pacific Climate Leaders. The list will identify companies that have experienced the greatest reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity relative to revenue between 2017 and 2022. The list will be published in the Financial Times print supplement and online at ft.com.
Eligibility for the list requires Asia-Pacific companies to have a minimum revenue of $50 million in 2022. To participate, companies are invited to fill out a short questionnaire about their GHG emissions and revenue for the years 2017 to 2022. A data verification form also needs to be downloaded, signed, and submitted.
The list’s ranking will be determined by the compound annual reduction rate (CARR) in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, which represent a company’s own operations and energy purchases, respectively. The transparency of companies regarding Scope 3 emissions, which occur elsewhere in the value chain, will also contribute to their final score. Other factors considered include the company’s performance as assessed by climate standard-setters CDP and SBTi, as well as their progress on absolute emissions.
Potential candidates will be contacted by Statista, but companies can also express their interest on the Statista website. Participating companies will benefit from increased visibility, media coverage, access to a large database of facts, and the use of the award logo for marketing purposes. A license fee is required for the use of the logo.
Who is eligible?
To be considered for inclusion in the list, companies must meet the following criteria:
-
Minimum revenue of $50 million in 2022
-
Headquartered in the Asia-Pacific region
-
Report emissions data independently
-
CDP rating score of at least B- (for companies with emissions over 2 million tonnes CO₂-equivalent, a minimum rating of A- is required)
