Join the Movement as Riverside Unites to Combat Climate Change Together

Leaders and volunteers came together in Riverside on Saturday for a day focused on combating climate change.

The event, held at Martha McLean Park, was a collaborative effort involving California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday, Riverside Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson, assemblywoman Sabrina Cervantes, local leaders, community organizations, and California Climate Action Corps fellows and volunteers.

Activities during the event included tree and native plant planting, removal of invasive plants, and a river clean-up, as reported by the California Volunteers Office of the Governor.

In reference to the event, Dawson mentioned, “Green spaces are vital for keeping our city cool, and the Santa Ana River plays a significant role in mitigating heat in Riverside.”

Dawson added, “By taking actions such as the ones we participated in today, we are all contributing to the solution. We are thankful for the assistance provided by the California Climate Action Corps Fellows.”

According to the California Volunteers, Cervantes administered the AmeriCorps oath to over 300 California Climate Action Corps fellows. These new fellows are expected to receive up to $43,000 in living stipends and school funding upon successful completion of 1,700 hours of service in various communities throughout California.

Three years ago, Governor Gavin Newsom launched the California Climate Action Corps, the first state-level climate service corps in the country. Its mission is to empower Californians to take meaningful actions to protect their homes, health, and communities from the severe impacts of climate change. The program is led by the California Volunteers Office of the Governor.
