On Saturday, former Representative Liz Cheney referred to Speaker Mike Johnson as a “collaborator” in Donald Trump‘s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
In an interview excerpt posted on social media, CBS’ John Dickerson questioned Cheney, asking, “The speaker of the House is a collaborator to overthrow the last election?”
“Absolutely,” she affirmed.
Cheney continued, “If you look at what Donald Trump is trying to do, he can’t do it by himself. He has to have collaborators. And the story of Mike Johnson is a story of a collaborator.”
In 2021, as Congress readied to certify the election results, Johnson encouraged his colleagues to join him in opposing the results. He played a crucial role in shaping the legal arguments against the 2020 election outcome and spearheaded efforts in Congress to support a Texas lawsuit seeking to invalidate the election results of four other states.
Cheney served as the leading Republican on the House committee investigating the Capitol attack on January 6, and has been vocal about her belief that the former president was accountable for the violence that transpired that day.
Following several years as chair of the Republican conference, Cheney’s standing within the party dramatically declined due to her outspoken criticism of Trump. In 2022, she lost her bid for re-election to her Wyoming seat.
