Johan Garpenlov: How His Play and Personality Shaped Swedish Red Wings for Years to Come

During his rookie season, Garpenlov had an outstanding performance, accumulating 40 points (18-22—40) in 71 games.

Although his ice time was limited in his second season, Garpenlov took on the role of mentoring another Swedish player, rookie defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom.

“Garpenlov came to the team a year before me, along with Sergei,” Lidstrom recalled. “As I was unfamiliar with the Detroit area and had no idea where to live or how to get around, Garpy, as we called him, was instrumental in helping me. He assisted me in finding a place to live, arranging car leases, and taking care of all the little things that you don’t consider, besides playing hockey. He played a crucial role in getting me settled in Detroit.

“Garpy was extremely helpful in my first year. I did the same thing for Homer (Tomas Holmstrom). However, it took Homer a bit longer. That’s what I did with Homer.”

Lidstrom’s mention of Holmstrom stems from Holmstrom’s claims that Garpenlov taught Lidstrom how to handle finances, grocery shop, and sign a lease – something Garpenlov vehemently denies.

“When a fellow Swede joins a team, you naturally try to assist them as much as possible. I did everything I could to help Nick, but he is an intelligent individual who handles himself well,” Garpenlov clarified. “Back when I arrived, Shawn Burr helped me with everything – cars, banks, driver’s license, and so on. So, I tried my best to help Nick with all of that.”

“But he managed on his own. He was an easy Swedish player to help. We also had Brad McCrimmon on the team at that time, who provided ample assistance. We lived close to each other, so it was convenient.”

Regardless of how effortless it may have been, Garpenlov’s mentoring has long been regarded as a crucial resource for any Swedish player joining the Red Wings, striving to adapt to life in North America. However, the humble Garpenlov downplays his contributions and expresses gratitude for what the Red Wings and their franchise have done for him and his Swedish teammates.

“First and foremost, I had the opportunity to play my first NHL game in Detroit, and I am immensely grateful to the organization for believing in me,” Garpenlov acknowledged. “Being part of a team with such a rich history, with legends like Gordie Howe, and seeing their retired jerseys in the rafters, you can feel the legacy in the locker room. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our two years there, both on and off the ice.

“What I particularly appreciate about the Detroit organization is their strong faith in Swedish players. They believed in our abilities and our potential to contribute to the team’s success. Nick, Homer, and all the Swedish players on that team proved their worth. I truly admired that.”

“In Sweden, Detroit is one of those teams that young players aspire to join. The fact that Nick played there, alongside other talented Swedish players, boosts their popularity. They are highly regarded in Sweden, it’s safe to say.”
