The US president, Joe Biden, recently announced a crackdown on inefficient dishwashers as part of his climate change agenda. Experts believe that Britain may also follow suit in implementing similar measures.
The American government aims to reduce water consumption by dishwashers in order to achieve a more than one-third reduction in water usage across the country. New regulations stipulate that dishwashers sold from 2027 must use a maximum of 3.2 gallons of water per cycle, significantly less than the current limit of five gallons.
Meanwhile, in Britain, the government has committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050, with impending laws against gas boilers and polluting vehicles, as well as minimum energy efficiency standards. White goods manufacturers will be required to label their products with water efficiency ratings, aiming to discourage the use of machines that are costly to run.
Consequently, activist groups warn that if these measures prove ineffective, further restrictions may be implemented, potentially prohibiting the installation of water-intensive dishwashers in the future.
Andrew Montford, from Net Zero Watch, explains that the regulation of water usage is already occurring in the UK, and suggests that the government may adopt the policy changes observed in the US.
According to calculations by Citizens Advice, a two-hour dishwasher cycle currently consumes approximately 92p worth of electricity. Nathan Richardson, from the charity Waterwise, emphasizes that dishwashers are among the most water-intensive appliances in households, and advocates for water labeling to encourage the market to shift towards more efficient products.
While Richardson believes that changes will not happen overnight, he suggests that if market-led initiatives fail, the government may consider enforcing rules that require certain dishwasher models to be installed in new builds or retrofits.
Paul Hide, from the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances, urges the government to provide incentives for builders and households to purchase the most efficient appliances, thereby aiding the nation in achieving its net zero environmental targets. He emphasizes the industry’s promotion of the eco settings on washing machines and dishwashers to optimize their performance.
