Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has expressed her support for President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign, acknowledging that while there are areas the White House could improve on, the administration has performed admirably given the constraints faced by Democrats.
Ocasio-Cortez made these remarks during her appearance on the Pod Save America podcast with host Jon Favreau. Favreau asked her about the limited number of Democratic contenders challenging Biden, including Marianne Williamson, the self-help author, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist, and whether she intended to support Biden as the primary race intensifies.
“Given the field, yes,” she replied. “I do believe that there are ups and downs in any presidency. There are areas where President Biden has been quite strong, such as his immediate implementation of the America Rescue Plan and the significant measures taken to address climate change through the Inflation Reduction Act.”
The congresswoman from New York highlighted the structural issues present in the halls of power, particularly within the Senate.
“I believe that until we have senators who are willing to challenge and confront the filibuster, there will continue to be significant structural obstacles within the Senate,” she explained. “The United States Senate, unfortunately, will impede a great deal of our progress as a nation.”
In the GOP primary race, former President Donald Trump remains the frontrunner, but he faces a larger number of competitors, including individuals who previously served under his administration such as former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and former Vice President Mike Pence.
