July 21 (UPI) — The White House announced on Friday that the leaders of seven U.S. tech giants have committed to developing artificial intelligence (AI) for ethical purposes.
President Joe Biden held a meeting with executives from Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI, who pledged their voluntary commitments as part of a larger federal effort to ensure the safe, secure, and transparent development of AI technology, according to a statement from the White House.
During a press event at the White House in Washington, Biden emphasized the potential risks and opportunities of AI technology. He mentioned a previous AI Bill of Rights and executive order he signed to protect the public from discriminatory algorithms. Additionally, his administration unveiled plans for AI research institutes to drive advancements in the industry.
“Today, I’m pleased to announce that these seven companies have agreed to voluntary commitments for responsible innovation. These commitments emphasize safety, security, and trust,” Biden stated. The President also mentioned an upcoming executive order to further mitigate risks associated with AI and planned legislation to safeguard the nation against AI’s potential harms.
The White House highlighted the companies’ commitment to enhancing security measures and transparency in AI development. They will conduct rigorous testing of AI systems before market release, involve independent experts to identify risks, share information across the industry, collaborate with local agencies on risk management, invest in internet security, allow third-party vulnerability reporting, and develop methods for users to identify AI-generated content.
The companies also pledged to publicly report the capabilities and limitations of their AI systems, as well as guidelines for ethical usage. They will contribute to research on societal risks related to AI, and the administration will maintain collaboration with the companies to ensure ongoing control of AI development.
In previous meetings with big tech giants and AI developers, Biden’s administration has been actively engaging with policymakers worldwide on AI-related issues. The Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division issued a joint statement to protect the public from AI-related risks, and the administration has outlined an AI Bill of Rights and executive actions promoting responsible innovation.
